Due to the nature of catering, we are forced to jump from employer to employer in order to survive. This means we are denied long service leave through no fault of our own.
Workers in contract cleaning, security, building and construction, and the community sector, who must also frequently change employers, can access the Portable Long Service Leave (PLSL) scheme. They thus accrue leave as they travel between employers.
We shouldn’t be excluded from this solution. We too should be recognised for the years we have dedicated to our industry.
Why is this important?
Right now many of us are using other leave entitlements to keep ourselves, our families, and our employers afloat during the pandemic.
Now, more than ever before, workers need jobs they can count on. Catering staff should no longer be robbed of hard-earned leave by the structural failures in our industry.
