Bondi Rd & Wellington St - Traffic Signals

In the interests of improved safety, TfNSW has recently constructed an island and banned right-hand turns into and out of Wellington St. It has published and circulated to residents "rat runs" through narrow residential streets as an alternative. This will create safety hazards in these streets.
Council and residents propose integrated traffic signals to include Watson St, Bondi Rd and Wellington St. TfNSW has dismissed this option.
We ask the Minister to intervene to require that the Bondi Rd/Watson St traffic signals be extended to Wellington St.

Why is this important?
We acknowledge the safety concerns at the intersection. We also raise concerns for the safety and amenity of residents, pedestrians and cyclists in the surrounding residential streets. We are disappointed with the inadequate consultation and disregard for residents' concerns.

Our specific concerns are that the changes will:
a) Increase traffic in local residential streets (Castlefield St, Imperial Ave, Henderson & Moore Sts, and Martins Ave) and gridlock at the intersections of Edward & Wellington St, Martins Ave & Ocean St Nth, and Martins Ave & Penkivil St.
b) Increase risk of traffic accidents at all the intersections along Edward St. The difficult stop sign intersection of Wellington St & Edward St, with its poor sight lines, will be even more dangerous.
c) Increase pedestrian hazards at Martins Ave & Ocean St Nth given the poor sight lines, & also at Martins Ave & Penkivil St.
d) Increase cycleway hazards along Martins Ave, a dedicated cycle route, making it unsafe and virtually impossible to use.
Project Timeline details
Project Timeline details
- The Bondi Rd/Wellington St intersection has a long accident history including serious injuries/deaths and meets the threshold for traffic signals.
- In April 2022 TfNSW proposed to modify the intersection to ban right-hand turns.
- TfNSW's 4 options included traffic signals. Due to proximity to Watson St they were declared infeasible.
- An integrated Watson & Wellington signals option was raised but dismissed.
- At its June 2022 meeting, Waverley Council determined to reject the right-hand turn bans.
- It requested a review of options for vehicle & pedestrian safety with lower impact on residential streets.
- The council put forward the integrated traffic lights option.
- It sought a timetable for consultation before any changes occurred.
- On 2nd September 2024, TfNSW announced it would proceed with the right-turn ban and suggested alternative rat-run routes.
- In the October school holidays, TfNSW implemented the right-hand bans at Wellington St with no consultation.
