Portable Long Service Leave for all not-for-profit workers

The ASU is calling on the Victorian Government to urgently include all not-for-profit workers in Victoria’s Portable Long Service Leave Scheme.
Right now, some community sector workers are covered by the scheme, which allows them to carry long service leave entitlements as they move between employers within the same industry. But many others, doing equally vital work in advocacy, the environment and social justice, are excluded.
The not-for-profit sector is a cornerstone of our community, delivering critical services, often with limited resources and funding insecurity. Workers in this sector move frequently between organisations, not by choice, but because of short-term contracts and unstable funding.
Why is this important?
Not-for-profit advocacy workers often go above and beyond, driven by mission and values. But they also face high emotional demands and constant pressure leading to chronic burnout.
Despite this, many never qualify for long service leave because they haven’t stayed in one job long enough, even though they’ve been serving the same sector, for decades.
By extending portable long service leave to all not-for-profit workers, we acknowledge the emotional labour, the burnout risk, and the reality of insecure work.
It’s time ensure that every worker who contributes to the public good, has the chance to rest, recover, and be recognised.
