Power for the People: cheaper bills, secure jobs and public power.

Every Victorian should be able to live in a home that is safe and affordable to heat, cool and cook in, whether they rent, own their home, or live in a house, unit or an apartment.

Right now, too many Victorians are doing it tough, with costly energy bills driven up by the profiteering of big, private energy companies.

The problem is that private energy companies put profits first. They don’t care about the future of our state.

That is why we need our electricity system in public hands. This will ensure electricity prices go down, and support goes to those who need it,

The Victorian union movement calls on our government to:

  1. Offer more energy rebates and upfront support for Victorians to help upgrade their homes.
  2. Deliver targeted energy support for Victorian renters.
  3. Expand the State Electricity Commission so it can deliver cheaper energy, renewable generation and energy efficiency programs.
  4. Introduce mandatory reporting of energy efficiency standards for homes at point of sale and lease
  5. Invest in installing rooftop solar, batteries and other energy upgrades on government-owned buildings.

Why is this important?

The State Electricity Commission (SEC) is Victoria’s publicly owned energy provider, and we want it to do more!

Publicly owned energy will help with the cost of living. It will deliver more jobs and give young people a future in the trades through apprenticeship programs. It is about building the clean energy system Victoria needs: owned by the people, run for the people, and delivering for the people.

We want the SEC to build more renewables, support households to electrify, invest in storage and transmission, train the next generation of energy workers, and keep energy profits here in Victoria.
