Relocate planned stop 20 upgrade to Northern side of intersection re Tram route 96 - Fitzroy North

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) has planned and is soon to upgrade stop 20 of Tram 96 and other Nicholson Street stops to accessible super stops. We support tram stops that are accessible to everyone, however do not support plans created in 2013 that exclude legitimate community input.

For stop 20, PTV will remove several significant and well-established street-lining trees, many vital street car-parks to our residences and bring 60km/h heavy traffic to within half a metre of residential structures and to two metres from our front doors.

We advocate for the proposed accessible tram stop 20 upgrade to be relocated on the Northern commercial side of the intersection and to not build the new platform in front of our residential homes.

The current plans were designed in 2013. In 2019, the area around the southern side of stop 20 is now significantly different. It is far more residential than commercial with many medium and high-density residences. The currently planned super stop 20 ignores the impact on our community, homes and street and our changed area.

The super stop in its current form will degrade and devalue our Nicholson St precinct, our homes and community, and turn our section of the street into a dangerous, concrete thoroughfare.

Please support this petition addressed to PTV, Yarra City Council and Richard Wynne of the Victorian Government to ensure a 2019 community reflected perspective is brought to these upgrades.

Urgency is needed. PTV have already set this in motion. At a ‘get-involved’ community drop-in session, PTV told locals they do not have a say as this is now a done deal. But we can have a say and we will ensure our street and homes are not negatively impacted by putting this petition to those in power.

Add your name to this petition to advocate against the current plans and propose a relocation of the upgrade to the Northern commercial side. Advocate against the removal of our car-parking access, of our significant trees and narrowing of footpaths to within half a metre of structural buildings.

PTV wouldn't get away with cutting down the plane trees on Bourke or Collins Streets in the CBD because of the value to the city, don't let them get away with cutting down ours!

Why is this important?

The stop 20 upgrade is based on a 2013 design when most properties were Commercial. It is a residential place now and we, as others, have our homes here. If these works go ahead they will devalue our properties and residents’ way of life and significantly increase the risk of structural damage to our residences.

Devaluation will occur through loss of street car-parking access, street amenity from removing significant trees permanently, and from decreased residential safety from having large vehicles travel 60km/h within 1-2 metres of front doors.

How it will be delivered

This petition will be delivered in person, by letter and email to all those in power mentioned. An initial letter has already been sent to draw attention to this issue.
