Safety, Security and Bicycle Parking for Royal Hobart Hospital Staff
We, the undersigned employees and supporters of the Royal Hobart Hospital, call on the Tasmanian Health Service and Department of Health to urgently improve the safety, security and accessibility of staff parking options including staff bicycle parking facilities at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
Many staff choose active transport as an affordable, healthy and environmentally responsible way to travel to and from work. However, ongoing concerns regarding bicycle thefts, inadequate security measures and accessibility issues continue to impact staff confidence in using the existing bicycle cage.
Despite previous commitments of support for improvements, including support expressed by both the Minister for Health and the Secretary of the Department of Health, key measures have not yet been implemented.
Why is this important?
We call on the Department of Health and Tasmanian Health Service to urgently:
- Install a roof over the existing bicycle cage to improve the security of the facility.
- Increase security presence around the bicycle cage and surrounding parking areas, including regular security patrols and visible security measures to deter theft and improve safety.
- Improve security support for staff finishing work at night, including assistance for employees walking to vehicle parking areas and public transport locations.
- Reinstate the original bicycle cage footprint and accessibility arrangements. Recent changes have reduced the effective space available within the cage, making it more difficult for staff to safely access and park bicycles despite the intention to maintain the same number of bicycle parking spaces.
- Commit to ongoing consultation with staff and unions regarding future bicycle parking, active transport and staff safety initiatives.
RHH staff should be able to travel to and from work and to their cars and their bicycles knowing their bicycles will be stored in a secure, accessible facility.
