Save Metal Trades, Save Manufacturing, Save Bell Bay

Hundreds of Metal Trades and manufacturing jobs across northern Tasmania are hanging in the balance, and the flow-on damage will extend beyond the smelter gates. Bell Bay Aluminium is threatening to close due to high operating costs.

Local engineering and manufacturing businesses that rely on, supply, and contract to Bell Bay Aluminium are bracing for what comes next.

Liberty Bell Bay's liquidation already cost the region 250 jobs, including 50 Metal Trades positions. But behind the 550 direct jobs at the smelter sits a much wider network of tradespeople, apprentices and local firms that will be devastated if the smelter closes.

Tasmanian hydro was established to support industry, jobs and the economy, and it's time that purpose was put to use rather than argued over.

We call on the Tasmanian Government to stop the blame game and act to protect these jobs before more of the North's industrial base is lost for good.

Why is this important?

Every job lost at Bell Bay Aluminium will ripple out through workshops, contracting businesses, and the wider community. The future of manufacturing and Metal Trades in northern Tasmania hinges on the continued operation of the industry in Bell Bay.

The government has the means and ability to act, it must contract to supply cheap power from Tasmanian Hydro to Bell Bay and save manufacturing in Tasmania.
