Stop the closure of City of Greater Geelong's aged care service

🎉 Victory for Aged Care in Geelong! 🎉

The ASU has WON its campaign to save aged care services provided by the City of Greater Geelong! 💪❤️

This incredible outcome is thanks to the unwavering strength, unity, and determination of our ASU delegates and members. You stood together, raised your voices, and made it clear: our community deserves quality public aged care.

👏 THANK YOU for standing united. This win belongs to all of us. Thank you also to those who supported the campaign, including the local Geelong Trades Hall, Vic Trades Hall and MPs, state and federal, who stood united with the ASU and to fight for the best interests of their community. 👏

The City of Greater Geelong has announced that they intend to cut up to 300 jobs and will no longer provide vital aged care services to vulnerable, elderly residents in the region. The Council's community care workers provide older Geelong residents with the services they need to help them to live safely and comfortably at home.

These committed City of Greater Geelong workers provide a wide variety of hugely important services to older residents including medication support, personal hygiene support such as showering, grocery shopping support, assisting with cooking and dish washing, as well as support to people maintain a clean and hygienic home environment. These vital services keep our elderly people safe and comfortable at home.

City of Greater Geelong community care workers are highly skilled, dedicated and experienced professionals who support many thousands of people in and across Greater Geelong and the Bellarine.  Their vital work plays a significant role in reducing pressure on already over-burdened Aged Care facilities as well as supporting people’s dignity and choice to live safely and well in the comfort of their own homes.

This decision is being made without meaningful consultation with the workforce. Workers have been told today (2nd April) and the Council intends to make a decision in a matter of days.

Sign the petition to send a message to Councillors of the City of Greater Geelong to stop the closure of aged care services and save community care workers jobs!

This petition is hosted by the Australian Services Union - the Union for local government workers!

Why is this important?

We need the Geelong and Bellarine community to send a strong message to Councillors, their representatives, that quality Council run aged care services matter!
