Premier: Protect educators in NSW!

My name is Lauren. I’m proud to be part of a skilled, resilient team of educators in an early childhood education and care centre in Fairfield LGA in Sydney.

Throughout this COVID pandemic, across NSW educators like me have been turning up to work, putting our own safety at risk to provide continuity of learning and care for children at our centres.

We have done everything we can to keep our centres safe for children and families, and for ourselves as educators. We will always put the needs of vulnerable children first and foremost, and we are proud to support other essential workers who have to leave their homes to work on the frontlines.

But with this latest outbreak of the Delta strain in NSW, educators like us and children have never been more at risk. We need your help!

The NSW Chief Health Officer has spoken about the number of recent outbreaks in early learning centres, and how Delta is transmitted not only between staff and children, but also between children.

In spite of this, there has been no clear and consistent communication from the NSW government to parents about keeping their children home from early education and care due to this increased level of risk.

This is not good enough. Early childhood educators should not be an afterthought.

Why is this important?

That’s why we are calling on the NSW government to give educators priority access to vaccination, as the QLD state government did just last week, now and throughout the pandemic.

We call on you to protect educators and families by communicating clear guidelines to parents about who should be permitted to attend early learning.

Educators are not disposable.

Educators are not less valuable than others in the education sector or the economy.

It’s time to protect NSW educators!

Reasons for signing

  • My daughter is an early childhood teacher in Sydney CBD. Each day her centre is about full. Parents are under the assumption the virus is not in childcare, will not affect their child. They send them even whilst working from home. Its time the government made parents aware their children are vulnerable to covid 19 and its time to keep them home unless you're an essential worker leaving home for work!!
  • To support educator wellbeing and mental health during these challenging times. I hope this will assist others to understand the work we put in, and that we always give our 100% to the duty of care for the children and families in need. This is also to protect myself and my family during these times.
  • To support educators their lives matter too..
