The Board of Studies and the Teacher Registration Board play essential roles in setting the standards for teaching and learning in the Northern Territory.
If the community is to retain confidence in their work and in NT schools, it is essential that they continue to be seen as independent and apolitical.
The Education Standards and Registration Board Bill puts that independence at serious risk by:
- Merging the two boards into one
- Removing all requirements for parent, teacher and principal representation, and
- Giving the minister of the day total power over all appointments.
There is nothing like it in any other state or territory.
A board of people with lived experience of NT schools, including teachers, principals and parents, is essential to maintain community confidence in our education system.
Having board members nominated by external stakeholder organisations, such as school systems, parent bodies and teacher unions, is the only way to ensure it is seen as truly independent.
Having board members nominated by external stakeholder organisations, such as school systems, parent bodies and teacher unions, is the only way to ensure it is seen as truly independent.
This bill has been rushed without adequate consultation with parents or teachers.
I urge you to withdraw, reconsider or amend this bill to protect NT schools.
Why is this important?
This bill opens the door to lowering the standard of education in Territory schools.
That impacts every employee, student, parent and community member with an interest in the success of NT education.
Please join us in urging the government to abandon this rushed and risky bill.
