Fix Curtin’s Transport Cost Crisis

We are calling on Curtin University to urgently implement practical relief measures for students and staff, including:

  • Free parking for carpooling and student residents
  • Free parking during exam periods
  • Convert yellow bays to cheaper green bays
  • Food for Fines to become a permanent year round program
  • Expansion of CurtinLink services to more suburbs
  • More direct and express bus services to Curtin
  • Fuel vouchers for students undertaking placements, fieldwork and research
  • Support for students travelling to and from the Kalgoorlie campus
  • A commitment to increasing parking capacity through a multi deck carpark

Why is this important?

Parking and transport at Curtin are a serious barrier to students accessing their education.

Students are spending up to an hour circling campus looking for parking, paying for more expensive bays, arriving late to class, and struggling to absorb rising costs during a cost of living crisis.

Students should not be priced out of attending university because they cannot afford fuel, parking or the time it takes to fight for a car bay every morning.

These are practical and achievable solutions. Other universities have already implemented measures like free carpool parking. Instead, Curtin students are being told to wait while simple proposals are bogged down in bureaucracy.

The only thing stopping these solutions is the willingness of senior leaders to take this issue seriously.

Students are doing everything they can to keep showing up during a cost of living crisis. Curtin must do more to support them.

Hi everyone,

Thanks to pressure from the Guild and more than 2,300 signatures on our parking and transport petition, Curtin has now confirmed free parking during both exam weeks each semester.

That means students parking in yellow bays could save up to $68 this exam period alone, keeping money in students’ pockets and giving students one less thing to stress about during exams.

This happened because students spoke up together.

We launched this campaign after hearing overwhelming frustration from students about parking shortages, transport access and rising costs on campus. This announcement is a real step forward, but there is still more work to do.

The Guild is continuing to push for:
• More parking
• Better buses and public transport
• A fairer infringement system
• More practical cost-of-living relief

Keep the pressure on by sharing and signing the petition.
