    The National Union of Students is calling on the Federal Government to increase commonwealth income support programs such as Newstart. It’s been 24 years since any government has increased the payments for newstart. Anglicare Rental Affordability Snapshot, there were only 3 rental properties in the country that were affordable for students under Newstart. Under Youth Allowance there are only 2 affordable rental properties. The NUS and Anglicare Student Housing Survey in 2017 reported that: - 82% of working students said that the amount of time they spend at work hurts their studies. - 85% of students do not believe that Centrelink provides them with enough to live and study Former Prime Minister John Howard has even admitted the freeze on NewStart has gone on too long. We are joining with organisations such as the Everybody's home campaign and ACOSS to raise the rate of Newstart and fix youth homelessness and poverty.

  • Ichi Group: Stop Exploiting Migrant Workers
    I’m calling on the Fair Work Ombudsman to conduct a comprehensive audit of the Ichi Group and ensure they are paying correct wages and that ALL former and current employees receive their correct back pay. It’s not fair that the most vulnerable workers, who were paid even less than me, should miss out on being repaid their stolen wages. Hospo Voice members don’t want to see this kind of exploitation of migrant workers in our industry.   • Fair Go for Pensioners!
    Fair Go for Pensioners calls on our respective ministers and parliamentarians to recognise the significant hardship facing pensioners and other people on low income as they struggle with the rising cost of living issues and urge the Federal Government to commit to national policies to reduce poverty and inequality. Fair Go for Pensioners reference to "pensioners" means all those receiving income support payments and payments to families provided by the Federal Government and administered by Centrelink. Fair Go for Pensioners call on the Federal Government to: 1. Increase the age pension rate from 27.7% to 35% of male total average weekly earnings (MTAWE). 2. Adopt quality indexation for all income support payments using age pension indexation measures. 3. Increase over the median term (i.e. 4 years) all single case rates of publicly funded income support payments from 27.7% to 35% MTAWE. 4. Prioritise over the longer term (i.e. 7 years) a publicly provided decent living income for pensioners. 5. Raise the inadequate Newstart Allowance to at least $100 per week for the singles basic rate as a matter of urgency. 6. Revert retirement age to 65 years of age and not continue to increase to 67 years by 1 July 2023. 7. Outline plans to achieve zero hunger so that everyone in Australia has enough safe and nutritious food to thrive. 8. Implement a new Affordable Housing Agreement to include for renters the growth of affordable public housing at 25% rent to total household income. 9. Increase Commonwealth Rent Assistance (CRA) maximum rate for retirees renting by at least $30 a week for couples and $50 for single - dis-proportionally women - and that CRA be indexed to housing costs not CPI. 10. Ensure pensions/alowances are not restricted due to overseas travel to visit loved ones. 11. Prioritise improved healthcare measures for all people on low incomes. An expanded range of culturally appropriate medical services are delivered for free or at lower cost under the publicly administered Medicare system including optional, hearing and pharmaceutical service and free care as a public patient in a public hospital. 12. Conduct and subside for healthcare card holders an awareness campaign to increase knowledge of medical supplies. 13. Establish and fund Medicare a free national public dental care system for all pensioners and other in low incomes. 14. Increase significantly the level of funding for aged care services and extend services to meet growing demand in this area. 15. Enact tough legislation and penalties for unscrupulous operators to protect older people and other concession card holders considering taking out reverse mortgages. 16. Outline plans to reduce the impact of the GST on all income support recipients and introduce a fair pricing policy for goods and services. 17. Introduce a new and expanded 4-year National Partnership Agreement on Concessions for Pensioners including for all utilities, public transport, motor vehicle registration, council rates and a broadband supplement or applied to to applicable hardware purchases of $40/month. 18. Reform the tax system for a fairer one including closing superannuation tax concession loopholes e.g. taxing all super pensions at 15% rather than zero and cutting maximum pre-tax contributions to $11,000 from the current $25,000. 19. Ensure these superannuation reforms reduce those ordinary default members' account fees and that such fees are invested in MySuper default products. 20. Increase the low income superannuation contribution payment up to $1,000 to assist low-income earners save towards retirement.

  • Job Security for Court Security
    Since Broadspectrum was awarded the Court & Custodial contract by the Department of Justice in 2016, officers have seen their workplace suffer. The Liberal State Government at the time awarded Broadspectrum the contract at $36 million less than the previous contractor. This $36 million was stripped from the pockets of these workers’ by shafting these workers onto the JBU (Justice Business Unit) no-stake agreement. The JBU was voted on by people who didn’t have a stake in the workplace and undermined years of fighting for good working conditions. In doing this the work environment at Broadspectrum for court and custodial officers has deteriorated. In September 2019 a well published escape of a notorious prisoner Laurie Dodds was attributed to the deteriorating standards of employment at Broadspectrum. Training standards have deteriorated and remuneration for these officers does not compensate them for the job they do. No longer can the contractor attract and retain talented operators for the role. Officers are abused and spat at by prisoners daily and are not afforded the proper protections to remain loyal to this job. Morale is low and employee turn-over is high, which only leads to loss of human capital & knowledge that is built over time. Further an incident in February 2021 where a prisoner had their thumb severed in a prison van’s door is another example of policy and standards where Broadspectrum have cut corners and caused casualties. Since the Federal court of Australia quashed the JBU agreement, Broadspectrum officers have been building industrial strength to fight for the working conditions they are entitled to. These officers are now in the midst of bargaining their new Enterprise Agreement and fighting for better standards of employment to attract and retain talented officers to the job. But Broadspectrum continues to cut corners by devaluing the roles these officers do for safe & secure communities. Broadspectrum have made an offer of a 1% increase and a 1-year agreement for these workers. This is not justified for these workers to continue to keep prisoners locked up and communities safe. It is time for Broadspectrum to come to the table on a real offer. And for the state Government to consider if they really want a Government department to be associated with a contractor who treats their workers unfairly and unjustly.   • Save Melbourne City Child Care Centre
    As parents of pre-school kids at the Melbourne City Childcare Centre on A'Beckett Street, we are upset and angry about the hastily announced proposal from Melbourne City Council to shut the centre in four weeks. We have been given an unreasonably short consultation period of two weeks and are feeling rushed and stressed by the sudden announcement. We want the decision reversed because it is going to be bad for our kids, bad for our families and bad for the early childhood educators and carers who work at the centre. Our kids need to stay with their friends and educators and carers they trust. The educators and carers need their jobs. Our families need accessible care near our work for our kids. Melbourne City Childcare Centre provides a safe, fun and professional service to our pre-school kids. This centre offers a unique 'family' like environment. Our MCCC community is irreplaceable and the value cannot be seen in budgets and bottom lines. Our response to this proposal is a reflection of the respect and support that we have for one another. As parents, we worry about moving our kids from their established friendships and relationships at the centre. We also worry about the confusion and stress caused by finding and settling in to new childcares. As working families it is important that we have access to childcare near our workplaces, we know that finding other good quality centres for our kids in such a short timeframe will be incredibly difficult and stressful. They often don't reach the $450 super threshold to receive contributions, and women also receive 50% less super upon retirement. It is also a startling fact that 70% of single women upon retirement become homeless due to this Super gap.

Guards aren’t asking for much – a new EBA with pay rises to help keep up with the increasing cost of living and help their families get ahead. But Wilson Security say they can’t afford it. Meanwhile, they’re pouring millions into car racing. It’s not fair. It’s time for Wilson Security to stop taking advantage of a broken system and pay up so workers don’t have to compete with Supercars to get fair pay.

  • Julia Banks: Spend one week on Newstart or resign!
    In Australia, the Newstart Allowance is $350 per fortnight below the poverty line. It has not been increased in 24 years. It is the lowest unemployment benefit payment in the OECD. The latest data shows that there are only three rental properties affordable to the 855,000 Australians collecting Newstart. According to the Salvation Army, after housing costs it is estimated that unemployed workers only have $17 per day, The Business Council of Australia, Deloitte Access Economics, and even former Liberal Prime Minister John Howard, all believe that Newstart should be raised as the payment is so low it becomes a barrier to work. What they don't recognise is that Newstart recipients are not only locked out of the labour market because they can't afford to look for work, they are also locked out cause there is not enough to go around. The latest ABS data shows that on average there are 15 jobseekers competing for every job. For this reason, the average period spent on Newstart is over 4 years. And yet despite this, Julia Banks - who has a base salary of $200,000 per year and owns 6 investment properties - stated that she could live on Newstart. When we went to her office to ask her how, she locked the doors. As an Member of Parliament, Julia Banks should be fixing this crisis, not kicking the unemployed while they are down. Well its time to put up or shut up, Julia. Live on Newstart for one week or resign.
